*facepalm at the long lecture down there*

Personally I think you nailed the texture in the new drawing. The hair has a very "real" dreadlock feel to it.

Would be much better if you didn't use a picture of him as a reference. This is what's wrong with people these days, they see a copy of a picture and assume that the person is an amazing artist.

I try my best and I think I'm good at drawing but my imagination is not the best so that's why I draw from references. I'm sorry you feel this way

Imagination can be trained, it is not something that you are born with. Yes, of course some people have a better imagination where they can come up with crazy ideas and there are those with a low or average imagination. It can and should be trained. Using photography as a reference is a very bad idea because it in no way is training your imagination, it requires no thought you just have to draw what you see in the photography. It can be easily calculated.

Have you done any real life drawings or have you ever went outside and just drawn what you see and what you feel like? If not, then you should if you want to improve your art. If you do then keep it up and don't give up, never think that you are not quite fit enough for that. All you have to do is step aside from using references and draw people you see everyday or some strangers on the streets. It helps, trains your memory and also your imagination because imagination is always something you have experienced before and usually highly exaggerated.

How can you not use a reference, this is how its done. Its a portrait of bob Marley, you cannot draw someone with out reference, unless you are making a character up. how all the greats did it, they had them sat in front of them, im sure they would of used photos had they had them. Good job mate, your technique has improved so much.

The difference between havign a real model and a photograph is a very big difference. Have you even ever sketched or drawn a real model who is sat in front of you? Apparently not.
it is much harder to paint a real model that just take it from a photo. A photo has everything. Composition ,lightning, colours and values. It has already been edited by someone and such. Drawing from life is much harder as you have to do everything yourself, except you don't have to think up the facial expression. You have to compose it in the page so that it would look fine, find and mix the right colours and have the right values. Not to mention that you have to capture the character of the model.

True that, but what if the first one also is drawn from a photo and the evolution of the artist still is visible? :D

It is very hard to judge an artists level and technique if a picture is used as a reference. You can see the true level of the artist when they make up something from their imagination and when you put them on the spot and make them draw a real life model, still life or make them paint in the wilderness. That's where they themselves must think of the composition, colours, values and everything else.
This is why I feel that the improvement for this particular user is hard to tell. The drawing could've also just been copied from the original, as far as I'm concerned.
